About This Place

Nestled on the scenic waterfront at 1 S Front St in Fernandina Beach, Brett's Waterway Cafe offers a quintessential taste of coastal Florida cuisine in a charming, relaxed setting. This beloved restaurant and cafe has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1984 with its fresh, flavorful seafood and southern-inspired dishes that capture the essence of the region’s rich culinary heritage.

Stepping into Brett's Waterway Cafe, you're immediately embraced by a warm, inviting atmosphere where the gentle hum of the nearby marina and panoramic water views complement the dining experience perfectly. Whether you choose to sit inside among the bustle or relax on the breezy porch with its shaded fans, the ambience invites you to savor both your meal and the serene coastal surroundings.

The menu is a treasure trove for seafood lovers. Start your meal with a shareable plate like the creamy, indulgent Crab Dip Au Gratin served alongside perfectly toasted points, or the delightfully crunchy Fried Green Tomatoes paired with a tangy bearnaise and rich goat cheese. The Peel and Eat Shrimp chilled and accompanied by zesty cocktail sauce offers a refreshing appetizer that sets the tone for the freshest ingredients yet to come.

Main courses from the water continue the tradition of excellence. The Shrimp Scampi, a house specialty since the cafe’s early days, impresses with succulent shrimp bathed in a garlicky, buttery sauce that sings of ocean breezes and southern charm. For a sophisticated palate, the Seared Scallops served with butternut risotto, crispy pork belly, and asparagus create a harmonious blend of textures and flavors that tantalize the senses. Other stellar options include the Lobster Fettuccini, featuring tender lobster meat and oven-roasted tomatoes nestled in a vibrant arugula pesto, and the must-try Grilled Salmon glazed with mustard, accompanied by wild rice and a delicate beurre blanc.

Many diners can’t stop raving about the Fish and Chips, a lightly battered, golden delight served with some of the best French fries on the island—crispy, flavorful, and utterly addictive. For those who prefer a lighter fare, the Seafood Louie Salad is generously brimming with shrimp and crab meat, perfectly dressed with a tangy, house-made sauce that enhances each bite.

While some patrons have noted that certain dishes, like the fried green tomatoes, could pack a bit more punch, the overall consensus paints Brett’s Waterway Cafe as a treasured gem offering honest, satisfying meals that celebrate the bounty of the sea. Guests appreciate the attentive and friendly staff, as well as the stunning marina views that make every meal feel like a special occasion.

Whether you are winding down after a day exploring downtown Fernandina Beach or simply craving a memorable seafood feast, Brett’s Waterway Cafe delivers an authentic taste of place with every dish. The combination of fresh ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and relaxing waterfront ambiance creates an experience that is both comforting and invigorating—a true highlight for any visitor in this vibrant coastal town.

The flounder sandwich is amazing. We sat outside, it was a hot day. I felt the fans could use an upgrade. It would be really nice if the fans pushed more air around.

They had blackened shrimp salad for a special and it was amazing. Also, they make a mean Members Mark Manhattan. It seemed like everyone around me was enjoying the Fish and Chips. I'll have to try that for dinner soon.

I had the Seafood Louie Salad. It was good! Only reason for 4 stars is I ordered the fried green tomatoes and they were a little bland. They have some of the best French fries I’ve ever tried, I don’t know why you don’t just use the same batter. A little pricey as well but we sat outside and I live their marina and water view. Great place to eat while visiting Fernandina.

Had lunch right on the wharf. Great atmosphere. Really sad this place is closing in November. Had a great selection of menu items. I had the seafood Louie salad. It was full of shrimp and crab meat. Wonderful dressing.

After a stroll through downtown Fernandina Beach, we stopped for lunch. Great views! Inside seats were full, so we opted for the porch. Nice shade and mounted fans kept it comfortable and the views made it fabulous. Nice sitting and dreaming of owning some of theose big boats. Our food was well enjoyed. Staff was helpful. Really enjoyable.

We had a late lunch here on Friday 5/30, with great service provided by Akira! The pulled pork sandwich was generous in size and quite tasty. Would give the fried fish sandwich 3.5 stars. The fish was pretty good, but the purple onion and tomatoes were sliced so thick, made it really challenging to eat the sandwich. Yummy fries and coleslaw. Accompanied by a Patron Paloma from the bar and we left full and happy.

Brett's Waterway Cafe sets at the end of Front Street by the marina. There is ample parking in the public lot by the restaurant. There are several handicap spaces also. The restaurant has curb appeal setting next to the water. Inside was well lit and clean. It’s busy around lunch time. It’s best to get there early. We were seated in about 5 minutes. The view from the restaurant is relaxing and beautiful. The seating staff were friendly and welcoming. Our server arrived quickly and was friendly and pleasant. She checked back often to ensure we had everything we needed. My order arrived in a reasonable amount of time. It was visually appealing and a good quantity of food. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The sandwich comes with coleslaw, BBQ sauce, onion straws, and a dill pickles on a bun. The pork was tender and mostly juicy and had a good flavor. There were a couple of dry hard pieces. The BBQ sauce moistened the pork. It had a good taste and slight tangy. The fries were crispy and lightly salted. It was a very pleasant lunch.
